Silvermine History Dinner Fall 2023
Please join us Saturday, November 11, 2023 for an evening of tasty food and storytelling.
The title for our Fall gathering is: “Before and After: How Silvermine Became an Artists’ Community”
Our host, Jerry Gleason, will talk about the period extending from approximately 1897 to 1915. Jerry will focus on how industrial Silvermine became an artist’s community. Included in this history will be many of Jerry’s famous “juicy bits” including polygamy, an abandoned wife, drunken times in old Silvermine, the man who cut off the legs of his wife, and two brothers who hated each other.
Space is limited at the Clubhouse and we’ll have room for up to 68 guests (we made more room this time!). Please sign up ASAP to secure your spot!
6:30 pm: Cocktails/Light Appetizers
7:00 p.m: Buffet Dinner (Italian fare)
7:45 p.m: History Presentation
Tickets are $45/person.
Cash bar 6:30-9:30pm
About your host, Jerry Gleason
Jerry Gleason lived in Silvermine for many years. While he was here, he fell in love with the area and its history. He especially liked the artists – all the various types of artists, not just the writers and painters, but the opera singers, the cartoonists, the musicians, and the architects – who had lived here in Silvermine. They gave the area a distinct flavor.
So, he started tracking some of them down and talking about them with his friends. This, ultimately, led to the Silvermine History Dinners that were held at the Silvermine Tavern on a regular basis.
They started off small, but eventually 60 people or more would spend an evening learning about the Silvermine past and enjoying time with their neighbors. Often someone in the audience would even be able to add some personal knowledge about the person or event Jerry was discussing. Everyone had a good time and Jerry often seemed to go out of his way to locate what he called “juicy bits,” aspects of life here in Silvermine that showed what a rowdy, bawdy, ultimately human, group of people lived and worked here in Silvermine.
